Special Edition: Big Kitty Post

By now, everyone knows that Adelor, the male lion at Lincoln Park Zoo has been put down due to age and illness.

For us lifetime Chicagoans, Lincoln Park Zoo is Chicago. Ranks right up there with the Bozo Show or something. Sure there is Brookfield Zoo but Chicago is synonymous with LP Zoo.

Several years ago two female lions came to live with Adelor. They were named Myra and Helene. Most Chicagoans could handle this calmly but not me. My first and middle names are Helene Myra. When I heard what their names were it was better than winning the lottery. Lincoln Park Zoo informed us today that Helene the lion had passed away January 2010 from cancer. I suppose it is some comfort to know her beloved Adelor is with her now, leaving Myra on her own.

The lion house will never be the same without that roar that echoed through the building.
RIP Adelor. You are missed already.

Aw, man, that is sad. Sorta like when Ziggy the Elephant died at Brookfield Zoo. Isn't it funny how we remember these animals like they were our own?
